PM Theory 2.0 aka PMT 2.0 is being published

Dr. Abu Fofana has investigated the causes of project, program, and information technology management success and failure and to find solutions that amplify the chance of delivering programs and projects, maximizing the return of capital, and sustaining organizational competitiveness in the 21st Century global marketplace. Copies of his doctoral dissertation Exploring New Theory of Project Management (PMT 2.0) Due to Projectification, Programification, and Globalization Escalation (PPGE) is available to all.

Here is an Abstract of the dissertation research study:

Project Management (PM) is considered the catalyst for worldwide infrastructural development, common or universal work organizational format, and a panacea to bureaucracy, lack of productivity, and time mismanagement. PM is estimated to contribute the US $20.2 trillion to world GDP in 2027. Despite its luring demand, PM’s track record remains, unabatedly, mediocre. PM domain expansion due to PPGE efforts has coalesced finite and infinite organizational functions, intensified PM’s complexity, uncertainty, chaos, nonlinearity, and limited PM theory’s ability to describe, explain, and predict PPGE constructs. The purpose of this multiple-case study was to develop a new PM theory compatible to and aligned with what the PM domain has become due to PPGE and to compare the existing and emergent theories. The study gathered data from open-ended online survey questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, peer review journals, seminal works, and archival records. One hundred and twelve PM professionals from Africa (N = 5), Asia (N = 9), Europe (N =19), Middle East (N = 9), North America (N = 61), and South America (N = 9) selected from the construction, healthcare, information technology, education, management, pharmaceutical, and transportation industries participated in the study. It posed seven questions along with seven propositions. The findings suggested that PPGE has enlarged PM domain, limited its theoretical foundation to effectively manage PPGE impact, created an ontological and epistemological fissure and contributed to exacerbating the rate of PM mortality. The findings supported the development of PMT 2.0 to fill that gap. Four key PPGE expansion ideations will impact PM theory and practice: PPGE has become the zeitgeist and disruptive innovation. It has manifold theoretical, infrastructural, governing, and management implications. PM training programs should focus on PPGE-based phenomena; broad knowledge of PPGE constructs alters PM mortality to immortality. Good PM theory is the sine qua non for sustainable PPGE success.

Dr. Abu Fofana observed, firsthand, the plethora of activities that PPGE-based organizational leaders manage every day when he became a director of project management and subsequently chief operations officer at a construction company with satellite locations in multiple countries. Even though he had a Master of Project Management degree and had a great deal of knowledge and experience in PM success areas, the application of PM tools and templates was not adequate to predict the behavior of complex and uncertain events. The lack of a body of knowledge system capable of undergirding PM practitioners to predict complex PM phenomena drove and motivated Dr. Fofana’s continuous research into exploring PMT 2.0 to find sustainable solutions to managing project, particularly complex projects and programs.

The actual book, PMT 2.0, will be available this time next year. Various industries, including construction, Education, Healthcare, IT, Management, and Pharmaceutics, are testing the PM theory 2.0 (PMT 2.0).
